Karijini National Park is the second largest national park in Western Australia and one of the most spectacular sights in the Pilbara. With breathtaking gorges, crystal clear rock pools, waterfalls, and stunning scenery, a visit to Karijini is a must.

The park has a system of excellent walk trails of varying levels, for the beginner to the adventurous, which will lead you deep into the subterranean gorges and through waterfalls where you can dive into sparkling rock pools.

There are excellent picnic areas as well as allocated camping sites within the park (visitor and camping fees apply).

It’s about exploring the serpentine tunnels of marbled rock, clambering over boulders and squeezing through narrow tunnels, inching your way along ledges, paddling through subterranean waterways and descending deep into chasms which have been eroded into the landscape over two billion years.

One of the big attractions of Karijini National Park is that its scenery is so accessible -you can literally pull into a car park, walk 50 metres and peer into a 100 metre canyon to see waterfalls and emerald coloured rock pools.

Fortescue Falls, Circular Pool & Fern Pool are three highlights of Dales Gorge.  Enjoy a swim in the refreshing permanent waters and lay like a lizard on a rock warming itself in the sun. From Fortescue Falls turn right to Fern Pool or left for the three hour return walk to Circular Pool. Fern Pool is about 10 minutes away and is one of the most picturesque settings in the park.

From Joffre Gorge Lookout peer deep into the gorge at the unusual curved wall which forms a natural amphitheatre. It’s spectacular after rain when a waterfall cascades down its face. A peaceful stroll along the bottom of Kalimina Gorge, allows the visitor the chance to appreciate the amazing rock structure present within the National Park. Amazing reds and blues can be seen within the rock.

Oxer Lookout possibly the most stunning lookout in Australia, celebrates the junction of 4 mighty gorges. Red, Weano, Joffre and Hancock gorges. Stand in awe and appreciate the tremendous forces which tore apart the earth.

Weano Gorge is possibly the best introduction to the walks of Karijini. It has a bit of everything and it’s not too difficult. You have a relatively easy walk down steps to the basin and a short meander between the layered rock walls and paperbark pools to Handrail Pool, which is great for swimming. For the intrepid explorer the adventure continues beyond the pool, though particular care needs to be taken.

Red Gorge and Knox Gorge whether you’re above the gorge peering down or deep within it looking up, both these gorges provide a dramatic insight into the forces of nature which have shaped the earth. Within the gorges flow streams of crystal clear water and sand bars, warmed only by the midday sun.

Hancock Gorge is simply stunning but best appreciated with a local guide. After climbing down a ladder, you wander into the gorge which narrows into a huge chamber and an attractive setting of small rock pools and marbled walls. Caution should be taken when entering Hancock Gorge.

Mt Bruce is Western Australia’s second highest mountain. Rising from the spinifex covered plains, it is revered as one of the state’s most scenic walks offering stunning, panoramic views all the way to its 1165 metre summit.

Camping in Karijini
Dales Campground. Access via sealed road. Caravan, Tent, Bus and Generator sites available. All sites are unpowered and bookings are not available. In peak season, Jun-Aug, it is receommended you arrive early to avoid disapoointment. Camp hosts are on site during peak season. Facilities include toilets and BBQs.
